In order to combat high humidity, it's common to turn down the thermostat a few degrees. That makes your home cooler, but not necessarily more comfortable. It also uses more energy. Your home comfort system consists of two major parts. The outside part you already know about because you probably have to mow around it. That's your heat pump or air conditioner. And the inside part is probably hiding in the attic, basement, crawl space or a closet. That's where you'll find your blower coil or furnace. The combination of these two parts is called a "split system."

Your combination is determined largely by what part of the country you live in, what the climate's like, and what source of energy (gas or electric) is available.

An air conditioner is designed to provide cool air and comfort by removing heat and moisture from inside your home and transferring it outdoors.

A heat pump looks and works just like an air conditioner except it has a reversing valve that reverses the flow of refrigerant, letting it extract heat from the outdoors to heat your home in the winter.

And it's the job of the inside part, the blower coil or furnace, to circulate the conditioned air throughout your home.

For better humidity control, even temperatures and quiet performance, consider a variable speed motor in your blower coil or furnace. Instead of either running full speed or not at all as standard blower motors do, a variable speed motor automatically increases or decreases its speed to meet your changing comfort needs.

By varying its speed and, consequently, the airflow, the blower coil or furnace is able to run more quietly and provide more even comfort throughout your home (avoiding those wide temperature swings common with conventional systems). Since it runs on slower speeds, the variable speed blower cleans your indoor air better as it moves the air more slowly across the filter. And, because it also runs longer, it can remove more moisture from your home.

Feeling comfortable in the summer is not just a matter of turning down the thermostat. In areas where relative humidity is high, you also need to remove excess humidity to actually feel more comfortable.

The "brain" of the Lennox Solution for High Humidity is the EfficiencyPlus™ comfort control. With the EfficiencyPlus control, you can adjust the relative humidity in your home to match your desired comfort level, anywhere from 40% to 60%, which is the optimum range.

The EfficiencyPlus control enables your heat pump or air conditioner to better remove excess humidity, as well as cool your home. That way, when the humidity rises, you can create your own personal oasis. It works by controlling the speed of your indoor unit's blower motor in combination with your outdoor unit's compressor speed. For the most effective humidity removal, match the Lennox PowerSaver^® two speed heat pump or air conditioner with a variable speed indoor unit. EfficiencyPlus control is compatible with all single speed equipment, but a single speed indoor unit does require an add-on kit.

How effective is the EfficiencyPlus control? Think about this -- it can help remove up to two times more moisture from your home than a conventional system. Beware of other products that claim greater humidity removal. You might be paying more for less.
